Fancy a car that’s kind to the environment? Feeling like you owe it to the kids who will inherit this planet of ours? Convinced that you need to be smarter when it comes to fuel consumption? Then check out this list of cars, trucks and SUVs that get the best gas mileage around.
This list should help you find a fuel-efficient vehicle with little research required on your end.
This list will feature the best annual fuel economy for a vehicle sold in the United States. For example, the 2011 Nissan Versa will have a 16 mpg combined rating (5-passenger) and the Chevy Cruze will have a 28 mpg combined rating (2-passengers).
The list is based exclusively on vehicles with under 10,000 registered miles. All of these vehicles are supposed to look great, feel incredible and put up impressive EPA ratings as well. There are no electric cars on this list either.
The list will feature a different vehicle for each day of the month and a different “winner” on each day. We’ll also let you know what month will be featured in the future, so make sure that you follow the site to get notified when new votes go up.
We’ll start with the best overall fuel economy for January:
BMW X3 sDrive28i – 23.7 mpg combined rating
This BMW X3 is a pretty new vehicle and it’s really impressive. It has a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and it’s just as fun to drive as any sporty car you can buy. This vehicle is all about efficiency, though, with a 23.7 mpg combined rating. This is a big step up from the Nissan Versa which was our previous winner for December.
What’s really impressive about this vehicle is that it truly is a luxury vehicle with plenty of amenities and creature comforts to keep you happy on long trips. Despite being a small SUV, it can be quite comfortable for passengers, too. It’s also a nice looking vehicle with an aggressive exterior and nice interior design as well.
One thing that we found a little annoying about this vehicle is the nav system. While it’s nice that you can play music on the backseat, there is no DVD player option for entertainment. This isn’t really a huge deal, but in a car with such good fuel economy you’d think that the center stack would have been able to throw in some sort of DVD player.
The best fuel economy for February:
Chevrolet Cruze LS – 28.6 mpg combined rating
This Chevy Cruze is a pretty fun-to-drive vehicle and it has great pick up and go. It’s a compact car that gets good gas mileage as well, but it doesn’t have many amenities or a striking look to draw in the attention of drivers.
The biggest thing that you have to like about this vehicle is the price tag, though. It’s a lot less than a lot of the other vehicles on this list, saving you thousands of dollars.
It’s also quite the fuel efficient option at 28.6 mpg combined while being able to carry passengers without being overly cramped in the backseat. The best part is that this vehicle is incredibly cheap, so if you’re looking for something that will save you money, there really isn’t a better option out there.
The best fuel economy for March:
Toyota Prius c Five – 51.3 mpg combined rating
This Toyota Prius is one of the most popular vehicles on the market, but it’s also pretty efficient as well. It’s a great hybrid that you can use for any kind of travel. The car has a 47 mpg combined rating, which is much better than you’d think for a vehicle that does so much with its fuel economy.
This vehicle has a 5-speed “hybrid” transmission that allows the driver to save fuel when you’re driving by shifting gears. So when you’re not using it, this vehicle’s “motor” is kept in a kind of standby mode as it sits in storage.
When you need to use all of the power, this vehicle uses its gas engine to take over and give you more speed than most cars on the road today.
We were a little surprised that this vehicle is only rated at 51.3 mpg combined. Toyota had better make a Prius v, or something that can compete with the Ford Fiesta in fuel efficiency, because if this vehicle gets more than 54 mpg combined we’re going to have some issues with our cars and trucks in the future.
The best fuel economy for April:
Chevrolet Aveo ZR2 Zetec – 31.0 mpg combined rating
Despite the lack of an “A” in its name, this Chevy Aveo is actually a pretty nice midsize sedan that you can rely on for years to come. It’s the perfect vehicle for any driver who wants to save some money. This vehicle is a lot less expensive than many other options out there today, despite getting better fuel economy than all of them.
This vehicle is one of the cheapest options for buyers who are worried about getting more than 30 mpg combined. It’s safe to say that this is the best vehicle for drivers who want to save a few bucks and enjoy a great driving experience as well.
The best fuel economy for May:
Mitsubishi Outlander – 30.9 mpg combined rating
This Mitsubishi Outlander is a lot more traditional in design than many of the vehicles on this list, but it gets pretty decent gas mileage. This vehicle is the perfect choice for families who want to take a trip in a new car and save some money in the process.
This is also one of the best choices for buyers who are looking for something to move cargo around in and still pick up decent fuel economy. It has an impressive 30.9 mpg combined rating.
This vehicle is especially popular with people who have kids because it can fit up to seven passengers comfortably and offers plenty of space for your belongings as well. This is one of the best SUVs on the market today, and it’s definitely worth your time to check out.
