This first generation of Mustangs was produced from 1964 until 1973. In 1964, it was created so that it could compete with the compact car that was in production at General Motors. It was designed to look like a small version of the larger Mustangs, but with a shorter wheelbase that made it more agile and easy to park, while maintaining the power and smoothness of its older brothers.
These models were known as 1964 1/2 through 1973 models, but they are all commonly referred to as the “first generation” Mustangs.

The first generation Mustang was produced for two different years; 1964 1/2 and 1965 through 1966. Starting in 1965 the Mustang was smaller, lighter and more agile than its older brother. It had a length of 196 inches and weighed only 2,200 pounds.
Since it used smaller engines than the older model due to efficiency standards and fuel economy, there was no need for V8’s. The first generation Mustang had a six cylinder engine named “Cobra Engine” that produced 105 horsepower under the hood.
One of the last new features added to this model was its power windows, which were only offered on these models in 1965 and 1966. This was quickly changed in 1967 when Mustang was released with a much larger hood, and the front windshield was now taken out and replaced by a simple cowl. The average price of these first generation Mustangs was around $2,300.

These models came with factory installed cobra engines, which later allowed Mustangs to compete with Camaros, Corvettes and even Ferrari’s. Overall the Shelby Mustang was a very popular model, and it became so well known that it even had its own model number GT350.
The second generation of Ford Mustangs were produced from 1973 through 1978. There were two different types of models: the 2.8 L 6 cylinder engine, and the 5.0 L V8 engine. These models were considered to be the most popular model of Mustangs since they took into consideration what people did not like on previous models, while still maintaining its classic appearance (the interior was slightly redesigned).
There were also many other models that were produced for the foreign market such as the 1975 thru 1978 Boss 302, and the Pinto GT. The second generation of Ford Mustangs started with 1973, but it was not released in the United States until 1974.
